What Is Baja?

Overview

Baja is a collegiate design series put on by SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers). Multiple races are held each year and consist of 100 collegiate teams from around the world. The static events include a business presentation and a design report. There are also dynamic events that test the capabilities of each vehicle. These events include acceleration, maneuverability, suspension and traction, sled pull, hill climb, and rock crawl. Each race event comprises of both static events and a combination of dynamic events dependent upon location. Each year we go through the design and fabrication processes to take a new vehicle to the races.

What We Do

Every year, our team designs a new single seat race car around a ruleset put out by SAE. Our car is powered by a specified one-cylinder engine outputting about ten horsepower. We design, fabricate and machine most of our parts in our workshops in Brown Hall and East Stadium. Before racing our car, we take it to our proving grounds at Hyder-Burks for testing.
